New Moon, Solar Eclipse & Mercury Retrograde – All In Virgo, Baby

The New Moon in Virgo (exact at 2:03 am PDT on September 1st) brings issues of health, daily routines and work relationships to the spotlight.  Both Sun and Moon join at 9° Virgo to create the second and final solar eclipse of 2016.

Virgo encourages order and efficiency.  She is often described as the “Mary Poppins” of the zodiac – practically perfect.  She is mutable earth; she helps us transform through improvement.  She helps us make to-do lists and organize the clutter.  She helps us purge and get rid of the things we don’t need.  Throw it away, give it away, or sell it – now is the time!

Virgo likes schedules and planning.  Ever analytical, she is ruled by Mercury, the planet of intellect and discernment.  We see this in the very cerebral and organized approach that Virgo takes to being in the body.

Virgo promotes self-care.  She likes to clean and groom the body, just as much as she appreciates a tidy home and a clean car.  For Virgo, this is about self-respect and wellness, not being flashy or fancy.

Virgo relates to the abdomen, gallbladder and intestines.  Many of us find ourselves more apt to pay attention to issues regarding our digestion and our diet during “Virgo season” (August 22nd – September 22nd), while the Sun is lighting up Virgo in the zodiac.

Back to the eclipse:

We talk a lot about Moon cycles (of course), as well as the cycles of the other personal planets (Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn).  We touch on the cycles here and there about the generational planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto).  And eclipses have their own cycles, and their own method of impacting our lives.

The eclipses happen 4-6 times/year between pairs of opposite signs.  We are currently experiencing the Pisces/Virgo axis, which began back in March 2015 and will finish up in February 2017.

Each pair of opposing signs remains highlighted during an eclipse cycle for 18 to 24 months.  Unlike planets and asteroids, which are moving “forward” through the signs (unless they are in a retrograde cycle), the eclipses are gradually moving “backward” through the signs upon their axis.  The Aries/Libra axis turned into the Pisces/Virgo axis, which will then turn into the Aquarius/Leo axis.

As the Pisces/Virgo axis has been taking over, the Aries/Libra axis has been loosening.  We experienced the last eclipse on the Aries/Libra axis on 3/23/16 (it was a lunar eclipse/full moon at 3° Libra).  2015/2016 have been big years for those of us who strongly identify with the signs Pisces, Virgo, Aries or Libra.

Identifying with a zodiac sign is not dependent on your natal Sun being in that sign.  Our Ascendant and Moon signs are just as important as our Sun sign when we think of “who we are” and what zodiac traits we are going to personify and connect to.  The other thing to pay attention to is where your “clusters” are.  For example, I have a huge portion of my chart clustered into the sign of Libra, which rules my 5th house.  The cluster happens to include my Venus, Pluto, North Node and Sun.

Astrology is so layered, and yet so simple.  I highly recommend taking a look at what is being affected for you on the Pisces/Virgo axis and how you can work with these transformative eclipses.  See my recommendations below for my two favorite Western astrologers in the Seattle area.

One of the other major things that is happening with this New Moon/solar eclipse is Mercury RetrogradeDUN DUN DUN DUUUNNNN!

Mercury went retrograde 2 days ago on August 30th at 6:04 am PDT at 29° Virgo.

Now, relax.  Pay attention to what you’re doing and saying (Mercury retrogrades will often bring issues of communication to the surface, as Mercury rules communication, intellect, transportation and technology).  But Mercury goes retrograde 3-4 times/year, more than any other planet in our solar system.  It’s nothing we haven’t dealt with before.

That said, with this retrograde, Mercury will be calling us to review issues relating to Virgo (health, work, duties, punctuality, efficiency), as well as issues relating to the house Virgo rules for you personally in your natal chart.  Due to the retrograde, Mercury will remain in Virgo for just over 2 months, which is a long time for Mercury to be in one sign.

Mercury is being supported right now by expansive Jupiter (who is hanging out at 28° Virgo), but Jupiter will be joining Venus in Libra in just a few days on September 9th.  By then, Venus will be at 13° Libra, but I can see the energy from September 9th – September 23rd (when Venus crosses over into Scorpio) as having great potential for romance as Venus is especially powerful in Libra, Taurus and Pisces.  Venus is the planet of love, beauty, art, sensuality and all things related to the divine feminine.  She is the singular ruler of both Libra and Taurus; those signs are her domiciles.  She is exalted in the dreamy sign of Pisces, and her “fall” (her detriment) is in the sign of pragmatic Virgo.

The recent Mercury/Venus/Jupiter conjunction at 27-28° Virgo was beautiful and potentially intense (especially for those who identify strongly with Virgo, or who have significant planets/aspects around the late degrees of Virgo).  However, now that Venus is roaming free in Libra (as of 8/29 at 7:07 pm PDT), she can really start to do her magic.  And when benevolent Jupiter joins her in Libra, he simply expands her potential.

Both Jupiter and Venus are known as the most “supportive” planets besides the Sun and the Moon in terms of their astrological influence.  They are the ones making our lives easier, while planets like Mars and Saturn are supposed to challenge us, ideally for our growth and not our detriment!

Allow the supportive energies to work with you where they need to.

Allow the challenging energies to do their thing.

Allow transformation to happen, on any and every level that you are willing to receive it.

Allow yourself to be the master creator of this thing called “your life.”

May the organized and health-focused energy of Virgo work with you as you create your master plan, deep clean your home, re-commit to your health and tackle your to-do list.  Let her busy and prudent nature invigorate you and prepare you for the change of season.

Go within and get very quiet at some point today.  Let the New Moon plant her own seeds in you.

You don’t have to do anything.

Just listen.

Just observe.

Just receive.

Full Moon in Capricorn and Here Comes the Leo Sun!

Pregnant Luna reaches fullness on July 19th at 3:57 pm PDT in the steady and hardworking sign of Capricorn.

Her ripeness in Capricorn symbolizes the collective need to “get to work.”  What needs to be done?  This can mean finishing up lingering projects and crossing off the to-do list.  It can mean tuning in to your pragmatic side, the part of you that is willing to take things step-by-step as well as give things the final push.  It can also mean setting aside time to go within and look at the “bigger picture” of your existence.

If you believe in soul-contracts (agreements our souls make before taking birth), you might feel a sense of purpose bubbling up for you with this Full Moon.  You might even feel like your higher self is demanding that you show up and pay attention.  Old patterns and ways of being that don’t work are simply unsustainable now.  Capricorn is represented by the Goat, and she is concerned with functionality and practicality.  She is cardinal earth, which means she takes initiative to create grounded and tangible change.  She is here to weed out the behaviors and thought patterns that are stumbling blocks or traps.  She is high-functioning and helps us keep a steady pace on the path of life.  She is ruled by Saturn, the disciplinarian, which gives her major willpower and the ability to focus.

Luna’s exact fullness marks a void period until she enters Aquarius at 8:10 pm PDT.  The void Moon is a time to reflect, go within and listen.  Find the pause in the wheel of life; find perspective.

This Full Moon is also the celebration of Guru Purnima, a sacred festival originating from India and Nepal in which the teacher or guru is honored.  The Sanskrit word “guru” can be defined simply as “the darkness destroyer” (gu = darkness, ru = destroyer).  It is a great gift to experience a teacher who lights our path and brings us into greater awareness, understanding, respect and love.

It is beautiful to take some time with this Moon to offer thanks for those teachers and gurus who have guided us and supported us, who have challenged us and accepted us and loved us.  The true teacher is here to reflect the light within the student.  It is a blessing both ways.

During the Full Moon, the Sun lies directly opposite Luna.  The Sun is finishing up his stay in the waters of Cancer, and he is preparing to enter the domain of Leo this Friday (July 22nd) at 2:30 am PDT.

The Sun illuminates the house in your chart that is ruled by the sign in which he is traveling.  We all have the entire zodiac within us, in different ways.  Each sign represents an “aspect” of being.  Leo is all about self-expression.  He is noble, courageous and charming.  He can come across as ego-centric or even selfish when his energy is out of balance.  In truth, Leo understands that self-love and self-expression are key components of spreading joy in the world.

The Sun will be joining Venus and Mercury in Leo, who entered the Lion’s Den last week, setting the stage for the pinnacle of Summer.  Leo values art, romance, creativity, family, love and performance.  Leo can be indulgent, like the ripe Summer harvest.  So: the self (Sun), the mind (Mercury) and feminine love energy (Venus) are all in the Lion’s Den together again – and the sign of fixed fire is igniting everyone’s sense of self.  The ego can also get ignited under this fire sign, and when too many aggrandized egos start crowding a room – well, we all know it ain’t pretty.

Hop off the ego train and use the fire of Leo to light up your purpose and your path.

Your wellness, your brightness, your talent and your heart are much needed in the world.  This planet is in so much pain, so much confusion, and the wheel of karma is plowing forward at tremendous speed.  Can we respond with quiet kindness?  Can we offer the alchemy that is necessary to turn apathy into caring, hate into forgiveness and fear into love?

What we have considered “self” is the biggest lie that we have been feeding ourselves for centuries upon centuries.

Small self is a shadow of the truth of What Is.

When small self thinks it is in charge, it feeds the creation of a false paradigm in which many small selves are competing for attention and power.  This has manifested as a world full of conflict, poverty, violence, abuse, pain and disease.

However, the Universe is self-correcting.  She may just self-correct humans out of existence if we can’t get our act together.

On another note, as La Luna wanes from her fullness into Crone and back into the darkness of new beginnings, Mars will be retracing his steps in Scorpio back into Sagittarius.  He has regained his usual speed after stationing direct, so any mire we may have been feeling from June 19th – July 12th should be clearing up or at least MOVING in a new direction by now.  This can also speak to desires coming to fruition, romance taking off (or falling apart), and inner conflict sorting itself out.

Mars energy is HOT, and he is currently heating up the final degrees of Scorpio (again).  Scorpio encourages shadow work and deep exploration of emotions and our sensual/sexual nature.  Scorpio is anything but superficial and she doesn’t care about societal norms, which is why she is so often shrouded in mystery.

For those of you who are geeky like me, you might find it useful to know that from now until our next New Moon, Mars will be retracing the same territory he was in from:

May 27th – June 12th

February 22nd – March 7th

Mars energy is powerful, and this past Mars retrograde certainly threw me for a loop, so I wanted to share these dates for the sake of reflection.

Mars will re-enter Sagittarius on August 2nd on the day of the New Moon.

This is potent energy available to us, dear ones!

I wish you magickal transformation and radical self-love.

Full Moon in Sagittarius

Hello Moonbabies ~ it feels like much time since my last writing to you!

I’ve been rooting and feeling into many changes and realizations in the past weeks.  The Mars retrograde seems to be affecting me in a major way, which makes sense since he is traveling backward in Sagittarius, which rules my 7th house of intimate relationships…..Mars is a strong influence, guys!

So it’s interesting that today at 2:14pm PDT, La Luna releases her fullness VERY close to Mars in Sagittarius – they will be less than one degree apart, a pretty tight conjunction.  This also means that BOTH the Moon and Mars will be opposite our Sun – therefore, the Sun will be spotlighting/drawing attention to both the receptive nature of the Moon and to the very exertive nature of Mars.  They will quickly draw themselves into a complete conjunction and cross paths in opposite directions (Mars slides back into Scorpio next Friday the 27th, but that’s another story).

We are being called to look at the yin and the yang of it all!  The feeling, emotional, empathic side of ourselves.  The active, aggressive, decisive and desirous places in us.  These two can merge, these two can cross paths, these two can MAYBE even understand each other.

This is all happening in very beginning of Sagittarius (between 1-2 degrees), and this gives this conjunction a very fun, lively, free-spirited flavor.  Sag is the Archer, the adventurer, the activated dreamer.  He is kind and playful, youthful, brave and very optimistic.  He is ruled by Jupiter; so how can he not bring good fortune!  He can help us put our hopes into action, he can help us begin with fresh eyes and a clean heart, he can remind us that there is always more light if we but reach for it.  In fact, Sag will often ask us to have faith, to trust and to believe.  He himself is a satyr (a magical creature, half-man/half-goat), also he is often depicted as a centaur (half-man/half-horse, but that is actually Chiron the wounded-warrior).  The point is, Sag is a magical creature – and he can support us in experiencing our own special brand of magic(k).

Ok, aside from this very enchanting Full Moon with Mars conjunction, some other notable heavenly happenings include:

  • Sun in Gemini! – as of yesterday (Friday) at 7:36am PDT.  Gemini is the intellectual, the Twins, the mind discovering all the patterns that make life so interesting.  Gemini is fascinated by puzzles, riddles, solving mysteries.  Gemini is eternally curious, talkative and has an insatiable brain.  Gemini is sometimes accused of being superficial, or even two-faced, but if you really know Gemini you see how egoless this androgynous sign is.  Gemini looks at the BIG picture, and its inquisitive nature is much more interested in facts than dreams.  The Twins are naturally playful, though, so this can be a very social time while the Sun travels here.  Gemini wants to put ducks in a row and make sense of things, but not at the expense of enjoying the process.
  • Mercury Direct! – tomorrow (Sunday) at 6:20am PDT.  Remember, speedy Mercury goes retrograde 3-4 times/year – it’s not this incredibly rare and exciting thing.  But definitely pay attention to the junctions when “it” (Mercury is androgynous, like Gemini which it rules) stations retrograde or stations direct.  So don’t be surprised if lines of communication DO get mixed up or go haywire in the next few days – Mercury is flipping itself around right now!

I will say that I love Mercury is spending extra time in Taurus because of this retrograde.  Taurus is all about the body, sensuality, the Earth, creating roots, experiencing pleasure and finding value in the physical world.  This could lead to a tendency to want to buy things and find value in materialism, but we can also channel this energy directly into our bodies, slowing down, finding a pace that is in rhythm with the deeper energy of the Earth.  Taurus is ruled by the lovely Venus, who herself is residing in the sign of the Bull until this coming Tuesday, so let the Taurus energy really love you up for the next couple of days – it could be fun 🙂

That’s all for now my darlings!  I’m off to yoga and to empty my brain!

Take what you like and leave the rest, with all of this.

Full Moon in Leo, Venus in Capricorn

La Luna enters Leo today at 10:21am PST, and she is exact in her fullness at 5:46pm.  Moon in Leo is courageous, innocent, brave and flashy.  The beauty is in tapping into our loveliness.  The challenge is in seeing our loveliness reflected all around us.  We are bright and so are they!  We are not brighter, and they are not brighter.  In truth, we are each far brighter than our own ability to comprehend.  The influence of a Moon transit is a mood and it passes quickly (2 days), but when the full Moon (emotional self) dances with the Lion (expressive, emotive, courageous self) there is something RIGHTEOUS about how we feel, something we can trust.

Can we allow the innocence of the Lion to further our creative expression?  Like a baby making all kinds of faces and jerky movements, can we simply be as we ARE, without apology or embarrassment or self-criticism?  Just BE THAT WHICH YOU ARE and know that everyone else is doing the same, in their own perfectly human way.  Smooth, awkward, rough, raw, subtle – we are that which we are at any given time.

Venus, the sublime planet of beauty and love, enters Capricorn today at 12:31pm.  Capricorn is the Goat, and she is better known for being steadfast than sexy, unlike the luminous goddess Venus.  Although Venus supports every sign she passes through, she is tamed in Capricorn.  As Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, there is restriction here, there is definition, containment and rules.  Venus is wearing her reading glasses now and an unsexy sweater, while sipping coffee and compartmentalizing her life.  She might feel the urge to go outside and put her bare hands in the dirt, reconnecting herself to the Earth.  She honors her roots, specifically those she has created with her own blood, sweat and tears.

Capricorn is all about straight-forward action and hard work, but she also represents transformation: her glyph is part Goat/part Fish.  She is taking-care-of-business, that is what she knows.  But she is also preparing us for the wild transition into Aquarius, the Water-Bearer.  Aquarius is transformational energy, like electricity.  Our Sun is now in Aquarius, as of this past Wednesday morning, and the rebel in all of us is doing a little dance.  Aquarius seeks the greater good, and he is not afraid of destruction and dissolution to create positive change.

I think it is auspicious that much of our country’s legislative sessions are occurring at this time, with the Aquarian Sun to shepherd our political leaders toward choices that promote equality and expansion.

Adding to the mix, Mercury remains retrograde in Capricorn until this Monday 1/25, when it will station direct at 1:50pm.  Mercury is mentality, wit, communication and perception.  How we PERCEIVE Mercury’s retrograde motion affects how we PERCEIVE the way things are “working out” in the realms of the mind.  I appreciate planetary retrogrades because of the deepening effect they have as they carve their imprint back and forth upon the sign they are transiting.  Mercury is taking its time with Capricorn, digging into its experience with the Goat from 12/11/15-2/14/16 (aside from its brief dip into Aquarius from 1/3-1/9/16).

Mercury in Capricorn means that the mind needs to focus now, the mind needs to produce, ask questions and create solutions.  Capricorn is so earthy and tamed that Mercury can’t exactly get wild or out of control – it’s more like nose to the grindstone.  Great time to work on taxes for business owners.  But as it slows to station retrograde or station direct, Mercury likes to stir up some clouds and many things are likely to seem uncertain.  Wait to finalize big decisions until later next week, ESPECIALLY if you feel as strong affinity with the planet Mercury.

The best way to understand your personal astrology is to receive an astrological reading, beginning with a natal chart reading.  The entire zodiac exists within you, for each sign influences a “house” in your natal chart.  The houses represent specific areas of our lives.  For example, Capricorn – steadfast, structured, driven, linear – happens to rule my 8th house of sex, death and transformation!  So the Venus and Mercury transits occurring in Capricorn right now happen to be fairly exciting for me.  Where is Aquarius in your chart, illuminated by the Sun?  That could be an area that is being given a boost of energy and nudging you out of your comfort zone in order to give voice to a certain type of needed social change.
